September 30, 2003: VANCOUVER — Daryl Duke, award-winning director of film and television, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC). The award will be presented at the 2nd Annual Directors Guild of Canada Awards on October 4, 2003 in Toronto.

As a film director, Mr. Duke’s career stretches over half a century and comprises a wide range of accomplishments in feature films, documentary, and television dramas and specials. On many productions he has also served as producer and executive producer. "This is a real honour for me," says Mr. Duke. "My work has spanned the globe, so it’s always wonderful to be recognized in your own country."

Established in 2002 on the occasion of the Guild’s 40th Anniversary, the DGC Awards recognize the most outstanding creative achievements in film and television by its members. "As our second recipient of this prestigious Award, Daryl exemplifies excellence that many aspire to," says Alan Goluboff, president of the Directors Guild of Canada. "His achievements are impressive and deserve to be celebrated. In many ways, Daryl’s body of work has not only entertained audiences, but contributed to popular culture and discussion."

Mr. Duke is best known for having directed "The Thorn Birds", the 10-hour mini-series from the best selling book; and "Tai-Pan", based on the best selling novel by James Clavell. As a businessperson, Mr. Duke in the mid-1970's founded the independent television station CKVU-TV in Vancouver, Canada. He was that station's first President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board.

Mr. Duke’s career has seen him work for both Canadian television networks, for all three of the main US networks and for most of the major studios in Hollywood. His film and television assignments have taken him to South America, China, the countries of South-east Asia and India, as well as the Middle East, Yugoslavia, Europe and England. Among other accolades, he has received an Emmy Award for his work.
The Directors Guild of Canada Awards takes place on October 4, 2003 at The Carlu in Toronto. A total of 19 awards will be presented, including Mr. Duke’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
